Duality; The Dichotomy of Being
Studio 18 in the Pines presents, Duality; the Dichotomy of Being, a virtual exhibition examining the experience of living in a dualistic world. We experience this world as a duality, a contrast between two concepts or two aspects of reality.
We only know light because of the dark. We better appreciate love because of fear. Good and evil are polarities that exist as potentials in all humans. Both extremes contain elements of the other striking a balance and an accord with the harmony of the universe. 9 artists share their personal exploration of the topic and how being in a world of seemingly opposing viewpoints leads to an examination of the self and our place in society. The exhibition features work by Lori Arbel, Jillian Blake, A. Emmanuel, Sandra Encaoua, Hope Ezcurra, Janet Gold, Carla Golembe, Reinaldo Lozano and Marki One. |

Super Natural by Cheryl Maeder
Cheryl says "I am a Fine Art Photographer and Video Installation Artist. The core of my work has always been about “connection”; the innate connection to the self, each other and to all other life forms on this planet. I am not separate from nature. I am nature, the environment and the infinite universe.
I was born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, USA, and in my early 20s moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where I studied photography at the Zurich University of the Arts. After 8 years in Switzerland, I returned to United States and opened my photography studio in San Francisco, where I photographed international advertising and fashion campaigns. I transitioned from photographing fashion models to photographing real women. I wanted to celebrate the beauty of women in all shapes and sizes. My photography work became the inspiration for the Dove Campaign on Real Women, Real Beauty which transformed the way women are viewed in the global media. In 2005, I relocated my studio to the Miami area and deeply immersed myself into fine art photography and filmmaking. While the foundation of my work is photography, investigations into video and large-scale installations have expanded my visual world. By immersing myself into the world of new technologies and shifting between the mediums, new opportunities for rewarding and creative collaborations have occurred for large-scale installations. Through continuous experimentation, I utilize my camera as a precision instrument to replace the traditional tools of an artist’s studio, such as brushes and paint. I focus my camera on the otherworldliness between reality and the abstract." |

HUNT SLONEM: Through The Looking Glass
International Artist, Hunt Slonem, Selects South Florida To Debut New Collection.
In its world premiere, Hunt Slonem’s new collection of Butterflies, Birds, and Bunnies morph into three-dimensional contemporary works of art in “Through the Looking Glass” at New River Fine Art, Fort Lauderdale. New River Fine Art is pleased to announce Through the Looking Glass, a new collection of previously unreleased and trailblazing sculptural and two-dimensional artworks from contemporary artist, Hunt Slonem, debuting and running from January 22 – February 21, 2021 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Continuing in his bold and brilliant investigation of the world’s flora and fauna, Slonem’s groundbreaking metamorphic transformation gives birth to a wonderfully refreshing realm of casted bronze, blown glass, neon, and multimedia-based au-courant artistry. “This new body of work was born out of these unexpected times,” said Slonem. “Given an opportunity to create work in an entirely new methodology, what has resulted is an artistic liberation of sorts. My established lexicon of forms has taken on new life in blown glass, in bronze, and other media, all in a visual culmination that is thrilling to me artistically. This moment in time has proven to be an impetus for an ever-expanding vocabulary of new work and I’m pleased to share it with you.” The artist’s impressive career spanning almost five decades now enters a new phase of evolution. Disciplined, yet explosive in his use of color, his signature gestures are vibrantly raw and wild. Slonem uses his new mediums with the same deft hand that rocketed him into the coterie of New York art world luminaries in the 1970s. “This exhibition, Through the Looking Glass, is a first for Hunt. New River Fine Art is so proud and gracious to be selected to be the premier gallery to showcase the new collection of innovative artwork. For an international artist, who is widely revered in New York and across the globe, choosing Fort Lauderdale for this coveted launch is astonishing…with this decision, he is actively acknowledging the integrity and respectability of the South Florida Art Market, and spotlighting the vibrant and strong collector base that flourishes outside of New York,” says Lisa Burgess, President of New River Fine Art. About Hunt Slonem Inspired by nature and his 60 pet birds, Hunt Slonem is renowned for his distinct neo-expressionist style. Since 1977, Slonem has had more than 350 exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums internationally. Slonem’s work is in over eighty museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. |

William J. Glackens: From Pencil to Paint
Trained as an illustrator, William J. Glackens (1870-1938) distinguished himself with his lively and engaging drawings that were published in avidly read American newspapers, magazines, and journals such as The New York Herald, Collier’s, and The Saturday Evening Post. He turned to painting as a profession in 1897 and soon became one of America’s most celebrated and progressive painters. Yet, Glackens never abandoned his keen interest in drawing and created some of his most distinctive illustrations as late as the 1910s.
William J. Glackens: From Pencil to Paint, a new exhibition that premieres at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale June 15, 2019, features over 100 of the artist’s works from the 1890s – 1930s, and highlights Glackens’ roles as illustrator and painter. By presenting drawings from the beginning to end of his career, and juxtaposing them with specific paintings for which they were made, the exhibition sheds new light on Glackens’ lifelong commitment to the field in which he first excelled and his uncanny ability to capture specific gestures, places and significant historical events such as the Spanish American War. William J. Glackens: From Pencil to Paint is organized by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and is curated by Barbara Buhler Lynes, Ph.D., Sunny Kaufman Senior curator. |
